At last temperatures under control and total silence !!!!

Hi there,

My fan arrived last week, haven’t got the time yet to mount it into the case until today!

Here you can checkout the fan, it’s a Scythe 120 mm Slip Stream Slim Case Fan (800 rpm) (SY1212SL12SL).
Cost’s around 9EUR and believe me it is completely silent.

So how do you fit a 120mm fan in a case that’s only 70mm high?

You install it on the top cover, the one that you open the case with.
You just need to make sure the fan’s power cable is long enough to be stretched out when you open the case.

Check out the result:

Running PCMark Vantage the highest temperatures reached 61°C and 57°C for the CPU and GPU respectively.
A very healthy result comparing to the passive setup where the CPU temperatures reached over 100°C…

Now at last I am able to enjoy my completely silent HTPC!

it’s look like that you inverted the mounting of the fan ;)

Congrats, so do you have a list of all the components you used ?

    Hey,

    Alvast bedankt :)

    Hey,

    I have a few questions.

Can you tell me if your cpu / gpu were much cooler after you install picoPSU? My closet has a 300W power supply, which makes almost no noise. My cpu is around 75graden while viewing 1080p mkv.

I have a few questions if you do not know an answer to it. I’ve put xmbc on Windows 7, but movies do not play well. Very slow, compared with mpc not. I also have a problem with flash websites. If I flash movies in fullscreen put that runs slow, do you also suffer from?

    Hi!

Awesome blog! I’m going to build a HTPC with the same motherboard, so it’s really helpful!
To the case and heat issue: Antec isk 300-65 comes with a powerbrick, ant has great ventillation.

    Hi TripKip

Thank you for your nice blog :) I was wondering if you could test your new Asus AT5IONT-I board with qvdpautest and post the results? It would really be nice to know the VDPAU decoding performance of this board, to compare it to older ION boards. Thanks in advance… :)

    Sorry dude,
I’ve been trying to get it compiled since I read your comment. Didn’t work.
If you’re able to compile it on xbmc live dharma so I can just run it I could do it..

Great blog. I just built a box with the same board. No heat problems but in larger enclosure than yours. Temps are around 54~60C.

    Hi,

ich just found your blog while browsing the xbmc forums – nice one, this is the kind of information i was looking for. Your setup equals mostly my ideas. One thing which i consider as important is the power consumption of the whole system. Would it be possible to test the consumption meanwhile the system is in idle mode and as well test it while it is playing 1080p.

This would be very helpfull for me :)

    • tripkip says:

Im glad you like my blog. I dont have the resources to test the power consumption.

Maybe the measurement device is available for free. My local electricity provider for example is giving away these devices for free, for about two weeks. They work really easy.

    Hi
    Great blog!

I have a similar setup to yours and I have added a fan but would like to control the fan speed but can’t seem to find it in the bios… Do You use that?

    Best regards
    Kasper
